Ram 1500 vs Silverado 1500: Power and Performance

The 2017 Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado have a lot of power, which is typical for pickup trucks. The Silverado has a standard 285-horsepower V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Two V8 options are also available: a 5.3-liter and a 6.2-liter with the larger version containing 420 hp.

The Ram's standard engine is a 305-horsepower V6, with eight speed automatic transmission coming standard across all lines. This truck also has two optional engines: a 395-horsepower 5.7-liter and a 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine that 240 horsepower and 420 lbs of torque. Among the more powerful options, Ram's top engine offers 410 pounds of torque, compared to the 383 pounds on Silverado's top model.

Ram 1500 vs Silverado 1500 Safety Features

Both the 2017 Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado received top marks for safety features. From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, each truck received the highest ratings of good for most tests, with a marginal rating for the small overlap front test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Ram 1500 a four-star rating, with the Silverado picking up a five-star rating, with the exception of the rollover test, where it only scraped four stars.

Each truck has a number of safety features as well, including standard ABS braking systems, stability control and airbags surrounding the vehicle. The Ram also offers multiple safety options across the line, such as rearview camera, parking assist and speed control.

Fuel Economy

Increasingly, fuel efficiency has become a major factor in truck buyers' decision on what vehicle to purchase. The Chevy Silverado has its best mileage with the V6 engine, as it reaches 18 mpg city and 24 highway. The other engines have an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 16/23 for the 5.3 liter V8 and an estimated 15/21 for the 6.2 liter version. 

As for the Ram 1500, its V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. In addition, the V8 model has EPA-estimated fuel economy of 15/22, and the available turbodiesel engine has one of the top fuel economies in its class, averaging an estimated 29 mpg on the highway.
