Brakes 101
This article is written to increase general awareness about the automobile braking system, in order to create a safer driving environment for everyone. This blog post is brought to you by Kelly Jeep Chrysler Dodge RAM.
Braking System
The braking system is an inter-connected network, it works together to create a safe and precise braking power. While pressing the brake pedal, you activate the hydraulic system causing the hydraulic fluid to trigger a clamp called the calipers. When activated, it engages the brake pads onto the rotor, which creates the friction needed to stop the vehicle.
Brake Inspection
Getting a brake inspection is vital to ensuring the continued safety of the driver, pedestrians, and even the vehicle itself.
Brake Inspection Includes
- Brake Pads
- Calipers
- Rotors
- Brake Fluid Condition
- Master Cylinder Fluid Exchange
- Brake Wheel Cylinders
- Brake Hoses
- Parking Brake Cables
- Wheel Bearings
- Hand Brake
Brake Pads
Brake Pads are the part which creates friction, necessary to create braking power, through contact with the rotor.
Calipers
Calipers are the clamps that apply pressure to activate the brake pads. Calipers require brake fluid in order to function properly.
Rotors
Rotor is the disc connected to each of the wheels. In order to stop the vehicle, brake pads create fiction onto the rotors, stopping the rotational movement.
Brake Hose
Brake hose is a rubber tube through which the hydraulic flood travels to the whole braking network. Finding one faulty brake hose usually indicates the whole network has been compromised because they wear off at a consistent rate.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic brakes to create pressure in the brake lines to distribute energy into the hydraulic system. In case of a brake fluid leakage, the vehicle will take longer to stop. If a vehicle does not have any brake fluid, the brakes would stop operating altogether.
Hand Brake
Apart from the hydraulic braking system, all cars have a mechanical hand brake working on two wheels, usually the rear wheels. If the hydraulic braking system fails, the hand brake provides limited emergency braking, but its main purpose is as a parking brake.
